Forty years after the earthquake of 1968, this volume retraces the history of Baroque in the territories of the Belice Valley devastated by that terrible earthquake and tries to rebuild its historical-architectural profile.
The Sicilian Baroque, which has been little studied by the traditional historiography, is analyzed through the study of the surviving buildings and their clients, both religious and civil. The survey, realized by different authors, intends to raise a few historiographic problems with the object to re-open the debate in the collective memory.

The volume presents a series of remarks about the didactics of architecture project by most teachers of the Department of History and Project in Architecture of the University of Palermo. The work is divided in two parts: the first one has a more general character, the second one refers to specific experiences detected by each single teacher. Here we have reflections, researches, analysis and remarks about a wide setting of didactic experiences, that all together provide an immediate perception of the complexity and problematic of their subjects. These surveys are not only parts of a rich discussion but, beyond the different opinions, they show a common trend. The book was born in occasion of a review of didactic strategies of the Faculty of Architecture.

The volume presents some of the most important works by the Sicilian engravers, active during the first decades of the 19th century in Palermo, supplemented by preparatory drawings realized with different graphic techniques, all full-colour. The mythological subjects confirm the adhesion of their authors to the Neoclassical standards.

The volume tackles the theme of the one-family houses, which were constructed in occasion of the 5th Triennale of Milan in 1993 and demolished after it closed. From the meagre photographic and iconographic repertory detected by the authors and also thanks to the use of digital models it was possible to “rebuild” the planning process of the single creators, with the object to highlight the outstanding aspects of Italian rationalistic architecture and to understand the social models of living in an extremely complex contest, rich of significant events. The text is supplemented by representations and graphic analysis illustrating the process of construction of the houses. Francesco Maggio is researcher in Drawing at Palermo University, where he teaches Drawing of Architecture. Marcella Villa is enrolled in Doctor of Philosophy in Theory and History of Representation at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Siracusa.

The volume retraces the history of Dutch architecture from the end of 19th century till the contemporary age. The Dutch experience is characterized by the constant and respectful attention to its own democratic social tradition but also by the current desire to develop new experimental languages using groundbreaking techniques and materials. Holland took up the challenge to realize high quality buildings at lower costs than others European towns, validating in this way the idea that a building may last lass than in the past and introducing the theme of “temporality” in architecture. The volume presents a wide iconographic repertory and it’s written in both Italian and English.

This study starts with the graphic reconstruction of a work by Le Corbusier -the Civil Hospital of Venice- a building that has never been constructed and that is considered by the critics a sort of testament of the architect. The methodology used in this research consists in the elaboration of three-dimensional computerized models, which play a central role in the critical study of architecture and are syncretic research and communication instruments. Till now historical research and architectural criticism have only occasionally made use of the advantages of the development of these techniques. The study has been realized implementing concepts belonging to information technology and architectural analysis.

This book aims to offer a visit to a work by Asnago and Vender (two important protagonists of the Milanese architecture of post-war period): the building in Corso Sempione 75, in Milan, which was projected and realized during the Sixties and it is described here above all from the point of view of the tectonic façade. The purpose is double: on one hand it’s to show how the framed system is considered a sort of evolution of the trilitic system, similarly to the Italian production of that time; on the other hand it’s to indicate how in this case the authors come to overcome the opposition between wall and frame thanks to a re-examination of the relationship between items and base in the façade, hence between figure and background.

The volume represents the catalogue of the homonymous exhibition by Prof. Marco Rosario Nobile and realized by the Central Library of Sicily in collaboration with the Department of History and Project in Architecture of University of Palermo. The book collects a selection of volumes, all edited between 16th and 19th century not only in Sicily but also in the world, which were used for architects’ professional education. It’s is subdivided into six sections, organized following a chronological and thematic order. In Sicily, between 17th and 18th century, an increasing number of professionals belonged to Clergy and had therefore a theoretical and mathematical education. The collections of books of architecture, the private construction of libraries, even the elaboration of press texts were used in didactics and also in collecting models. The books preserved in the Central Library of Sicily attest the multifaceted richness of that time and can represent the culture of an entire generation of protagonists of baroque architecture. Introductive essays precede the different sections, where besides the characteristics of each volume the most significant engravings are reproduced.

From the Illuminist France to the Eastern Sicily, the volume analyses various religious, social and cultural implications that follow this parallel weft through written documents extracted from comunal and statal archives and historical events that conditioned its development. Across the centuries, the cemetery - “the city of dead” - has been assigned different attributions, from public outfit to place of memory, with a continuous comparison with the urban phenomena characterizing and, at time, upsetting the “city of alives”. The volume is very well illustrated, rich of photographs and antique drawings.

This study by Gabriella Cianciolo is the result of accurate researches and was realized with appropriate methodological and critical instruments, it has the double merit to reconstruct a personality that has never been studied in depth, thought considered of great interest both in Sicily and Mexico, and also the merit to stimulate the attention over some themes of the 19th century architecture.

The Carmine church plays an important role in the small town of Sciacca, close to Agrigento. The volume deals with the complicated construction works concerning which concerned the church between the seventeenth century and the nineteenth century.
The aim is not only to provide a chronological list of the construction activity undertaken by the religious order of “Carmelitani”, but also to investigate the role played by the architect Andrea Gigante, coming from Trapani. He is thought to be the author of the restoration works on the church and he can be considered the protagonist of a particular period for the Sicilian architecture, between the late Baroque and the neoclassicism.
As result, studying the history of Carmine church enables to go into the broadest history of Sciacca, giving it a central role and a considerable influence within Sicily to the same extent as Palermo and Trapani.

“L’azzurro del cielo” (“the blue sky”), a poetical expression used by Aldo Rossi on the occasion of the plan for the expansion of Modena cemetery in 1972, is now a term that recalls the image of cemetery.
The author intends to underline the social and cultural role of the cemetery, especially in relation to the city of Catania and the main noble family who commissioned the most famous architect the erection of tombs with immense architectural value. Therefore the cemetery becomes a place to visit as a museum “in an open air”, where art and architecture are intended as social and cultural events in a natural and colour atmosphere.
The book is enriched by numerous colour pictures, unpublished archive drawings of noble family’s tomb and accurate surveys managed by the author.

In spite of the numerous publication about the castle, the bibliography on this subject is lack of a research regarding the architectural problems.   The analysis of some examples of feudal architecture in Sicily between 16th and 17th century offers the occasion to rewrite a page of the history of Sicilian architecture. The cases presented in this volume, supported by documents, highlight the intense constructive activity that took place in those Sicilian provinces where the noble families had greater economic interests. So the history of those buildings entwines with the history of the most influential families that during those centuries held the highest institutional offices of the vice-reign and built sumptuous palaces in order to symbolize their power and their presence over the territory: the Gravinas in Francofone, the Alliatas in Salaparuta and Villafranca, the Valguarneras in Assoro and the Filangeris in Santa Margherita Belice.

A valuable overview over the architectural drawing in the 18th century South-Eastern Sicily. During 18th century the diocese of Syracuse was committed in a considerable reconstruction of its churches, because the destructive earthquake of 1693 destroyed most of them but also because of a purely aesthetic necessity for modernization of the existing structures. The plates, which have an important documentary, historical and aesthetic value, have been here published and examined by scholars of history of architecture. The colour drawings are attributed to the protagonists of the 19th century Sicilian architecture, from Paolo Labisi to Rosario Gagliardi, from Giovan Battista Cascione Vaccarini to Francesco Battaglia.
